Marketing Cloud Next vs Account Engagement: Which to Buy

Marketing Cloud Next vs Account Engagement: Which to Buy

September 25, 2026
Salesforce has announced no retirement for Account Engagement, and every Account Engagement tier now bundles a Marketing Cloud Next edition. Growth+ at USD 1,250 includes the product that costs USD 1,500 standalone. Here is what each tier really costs once the Data 360 meter and the 180,000-email ceiling are in the model.

Salesforce has published no end of sale and no end of life for Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, the product most people still call Pardot. As of September 2026 every Account Engagement tier bundles a Marketing Cloud Next edition, and Account Engagement Growth+ at USD 1,250 per org per month includes Marketing Cloud Next Growth, which costs USD 1,500 per month bought on its own. For most B2B buyers the choice has collapsed into one product.

That pricing inversion is not a typo and it is not a promotion. It is on two separate Salesforce pricing pages, verified 21 September 2026, and it changes the answer to a question thousands of marketing teams are currently asking their partner.

What Salesforce calls these products today, and why you will see four names

Before the money, the naming, because it is the reason most comparison articles on this topic are wrong.

Salesforce rebranded Marketing Cloud to Agentforce Marketing at Dreamforce 2025. The underlying platform is called Marketing Cloud Next, and the editions on it are Growth and Advanced. Depending which Salesforce page you land on, the same product appears as "Marketing Cloud Next Growth Edition" or simply "Marketing Cloud Growth Edition", under either an "Agentforce Marketing" or a "Marketing Cloud Next" banner.

Salesforce's own pages disagree here, so prefer the most specific and current one. The main marketing pricing page uses Agentforce Marketing as the brand and Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced as the SKUs. Third-party listings, including several that rank well for this query, still say Marketing Cloud Growth. They mean the same product.

There is a worse naming problem waiting for you in the quote. As of today, "Advanced" means four different things at four different prices:

"Advanced" meansPriceUnit
Sales and Service Cloud Advanced EditionUSD 395per user per month
Marketing Cloud Next Advanced EditionUSD 3,250per org per month
Account Engagement Advanced+USD 4,400per org per month
The Marketing Cloud Next Advanced edition bundled inside Account Engagement Plus+included in USD 2,750per org per month

All figures published by Salesforce and verified 21 September 2026. A sales conversation that lands on "you will want Advanced" is not actionable information, and we have watched two procurement teams budget the wrong one of these.

Is Salesforce Account Engagement (Pardot) being retired?

No Salesforce statement announcing an end of sale or end of life for Marketing Cloud Account Engagement exists. We looked specifically, and the honest answer is that Salesforce has said nothing either way.

Three things are worth separating, because they get conflated constantly.

An announced retirement. There is not one. Salesforce does publish these denials when it wants to: the Marketing Cloud Engagement pricing page states flatly that there are "no End-of-Life (EOL), End-of-Sale (EOS), or End-of-Roadmap (EOR) plans for Marketing Cloud Engagement." No equivalent statement exists for Account Engagement, in either direction.

A retirement people misread as one. Searching for "Pardot retirement" surfaces a genuine Salesforce retirement notice, but it covers the Pardot Classic app inside Salesforce, retired on 17 October 2022, not the product. Salesforce notes the legacy app at pi.pardot.com "is still available to all customers with the same classic UI experience." A lot of content treats that as evidence of product sunset. It is not.

Salesforce steering new customers toward Marketing Cloud Next. This is real and it is significant, but Salesforce frames it as addition rather than replacement. Account Engagement customers get Marketing Cloud capability through Account Engagement+ permission set licences, and Salesforce's own Trailhead content says you can access next-generation capability "without migrating your data or rebuilding your programs." The word Salesforce uses is convergence, not migration.

The precedent worth holding in mind is Salesforce CPQ. It went end of sale in March 2025 and is explicitly not end of life, and the 2029 to 2030 retirement date that circulates widely is analyst inference that Salesforce never published. The lesson transfers directly: absence of an announcement today is not a guarantee of none arriving, but nobody should make a seven-figure platform decision on a date no vendor has published.

One gap we could not close. No Salesforce page confirms Account Engagement is still actively sold to net-new customers. It is on the price list, and a price list page is not a statement of availability for new business. If you are buying fresh rather than renewing, ask that question explicitly and get the answer in writing.

What does each product cost, and where does the price invert?

All figures below are published by Salesforce and were verified on 21 September 2026. Prices are per org per month, billed annually, which is itself a structural difference from the per-user Sales and Service ladder.

Plus+USD 2,75010,000MCN Advanced

Pro+USD 2,0002.5 million15,000
Corporate+USD 5,50010 million45,000
Enterprise+USD 30,000150 million500,000

Read the first two tables together and the inversion is obvious. Account Engagement Growth+ costs USD 250 per month less than Marketing Cloud Next Growth, and includes it. Plus+ at USD 2,750 undercuts MCN Advanced standalone at USD 3,250, and includes it along with the whole Account Engagement stack.

We cannot tell you why Salesforce has priced it this way, and it may not last. What we can tell you is that a B2B organisation being quoted Marketing Cloud Next standalone should ask what the Account Engagement bundle costs before signing, because on published list prices it is cheaper and strictly larger.

Notice also that the contact allowance is flat at 10,000 across the first three Account Engagement tiers, so you are paying for capability rather than database size until Premium+ at 75,000.

The 180,000 email limit is where the quoted price and the real price diverge

Salesforce publishes enforced allocations for Marketing Cloud Next. These are limits, not guidance.

Marketing Cloud Next allocation (published, enforced)GrowthAdvanced
Email credits per year180,000360,000
Active flows500750
Engagement scoring rules25100
Scoring models12
Marketing object storage10 GB50 GB
CMS storage10 GB plus 2 GB per user10 GB plus 2 GB per user

One hundred and eighty thousand email credits a year is 15,000 sends a month. A 10,000-contact B2B database sending two campaigns a month has used its annual allocation and is into overage at USD 2 per 1,000 sends. A monthly newsletter plus a nurture programme plus event invitations will pass it inside three quarters.

Now compare that against Marketing Cloud Engagement Pro+ at USD 2,000 per month, which includes 2.5 million email messages. On a pure send basis, Engagement Pro+ delivers roughly fourteen times the volume for a third more money. The apparent price ordering of these products inverts once you put sends next to them, which is why comparing monthly figures alone produces the wrong shortlist.

The single scoring model on Growth is the other allocation that bites. A business selling two distinct products to two distinct buyer personas needs differentiated scoring, and that requirement alone moves you to Advanced regardless of contact count.

Data 360 is not optional for Marketing Cloud Next, and it is metered

This is the cost line that turns a USD 1,500 monthly licence into something else entirely.

Marketing Cloud Next requires Data 360, and Data 360 is consumption-priced. Salesforce publishes the rates: USD 0.005 per credit, or USD 500 per 100,000 Flex Credits. Profiles are USD 240 per 1,000 per year at one credit each, and Enterprise Profiles are USD 420 per 1,000 per year at two credits each.

The consumption multipliers per million rows processed are where budgets disappear:

  • Segmentation: 20 credits
  • Batch activation: 10 credits
  • Calculated insights: 15 credits
  • Batch profile unification: 100,000 credits

Identity resolution costs five thousand times what activating a segment costs, per million rows. That is not a typo and it is not unusual for the category, but it is the reason Data 360 bills surprise people. Ingestion is free, processing is not.

Salesforce publishes its own worked example for a marketing use case, and it is the most useful number in this post: a first-year Data 360 spend of USD 106,305, with activation alone at roughly USD 24,587 a year. That sits on top of the licence.

So a buyer comparing USD 1,500 for Marketing Cloud Next against USD 1,250 for Account Engagement is comparing two numbers that do not describe the same thing. Account Engagement runs on its own prospect database, while Marketing Cloud Next runs on a meter.

We could not find any statement of whether Marketing Cloud Next editions include a baseline Data 360 credit allowance. That is a material gap for cost modelling and a direct question for your account executive.

What can Account Engagement do that Marketing Cloud Next cannot?

CapabilityAccount EngagementMarketing Cloud Next

The Engagement Studio gap is the one experienced Pardot teams feel most. Rebuilding a mature nurture programme as Flows is possible and in some ways more powerful, but it is a different skill and a different debugging experience, not a like-for-like swap. Whoever owns your nurture programmes should look at Flow before anybody commits to a timeline.

Going the other way, Marketing Cloud Next brings SMS, WhatsApp and mobile app messaging, Agentforce campaign creation, native Data 360 segmentation across all org data, multi-touch attribution which arrived in February 2026, two-way conversational email, and CMS-native content on Lightning builders. Advanced edition adds Path Experiment for live journey testing, Einstein Engagement Frequency, Einstein Engagement Scoring and Unified Conversations for SMS.

A caveat on maturity. Salesforce's marketing and help pages carried no beta or pilot labels on any of these features, which is why we have not marked any, but absence of a label is not confirmed general availability and Salesforce marketing pages rarely label pilots. Ask for GA confirmation on anything your business case depends on.

Business units are the constraint that decides multi-brand B2B

This is the requirement we see force a decision more often than any feature comparison, and it is buried in the documentation.

Salesforce's business units documentation states that business units in Marketing Cloud Next are available in Marketing Cloud Engagement Corporate+ and Enterprise+ editions. They are not in Marketing Cloud Next Growth or Advanced bought standalone. Each business unit maps one-to-one to a data space, and you need at least two data spaces to enable the feature at all.

Account Engagement Advanced+ at USD 4,400 lists business units as included, and Salesforce still publishes a current multiple business units implementation guide for Account Engagement.

So a multi-brand or multi-region B2B organisation that needs separated business units cannot get there on Marketing Cloud Next Growth or Advanced alone. The routes are Account Engagement Advanced+ or Marketing Cloud Engagement Corporate+ at USD 5,500. That is a four-figure monthly difference decided by a requirement most discovery workshops raise in the first hour.

Is there a migration tool from Account Engagement to Marketing Cloud Next?

No. There is no Salesforce-provided automated migration tool, and no Salesforce source we could find names one.

That sounds worse than it is, because migration is not the intended path. Salesforce's documented approach is coexistence: Account Engagement customers get Marketing Cloud Next capability through permission set licences, existing email programmes keep running, and the two platforms share email consent matching automatically. Salesforce's coexistence documentation sets out the prerequisites, which are Data 360 enabled and configured and data governance permissions set for Account Engagement objects.

One detail in that documentation is easy to miss and costs real effort: content is copied, not migrated. Account Engagement assets have to be copied into Salesforce CMS to be reused in Marketing Cloud Next.

If you do attempt a genuine cutover rather than coexistence, this is what gets rebuilt by hand:

  1. Engagement Studio programmes, rebuilt as Flows. No converter exists.
  2. Automation Rules and Completion Actions, rebuilt as Flows.
  3. The scoring and grading model, re-expressed as Engagement plus Fit. Letter grading has no direct equivalent.
  4. Forms and landing pages, rebuilt on CMS and Lightning builders.
  5. Email templates, re-templated into CMS.
  6. The preference centre, rebuilt against the Consent Object.

On timelines, the only figure we found anywhere is a six-week claim from a partner selling six-week migrations, on an undated page. We are not going to repeat it as a benchmark. No credible independent timeline or fee data exists for this migration, and any consultancy quoting you a confident number, including us, is extrapolating from adjacent work rather than from published data. Ask what that extrapolation is based on.

How to choose between them

  1. Ask what your annual email volume actually is. If it is above 180,000 sends, Marketing Cloud Next Growth is already in overage before you account for growth, and the comparison shifts toward Engagement editions or Advanced.
  2. Count your business units. If you need more than one, Marketing Cloud Next standalone is out, and you are choosing between Account Engagement Advanced+ at USD 4,400 and Marketing Cloud Engagement Corporate+ at USD 5,500.
  3. Price the Data 360 meter before the licence. Profiles, segmentation runs and any identity resolution. Salesforce's own worked example is USD 106,305 in year one.
  4. Compare the bundle against the standalone. On published list prices, Account Engagement Growth+ at USD 1,250 includes Marketing Cloud Next Growth and undercuts it. Make Salesforce explain why you should buy the smaller thing for more money.
  5. Audit your Engagement Studio programmes honestly. Count them, and count how many people know how they work. That number, not the licence, is your migration cost.
  6. Check your CRM edition. The Account Engagement+ permission set licences require Sales or Service Cloud Enterprise Edition or higher. Professional Edition customers have an upgrade in the plan whether they expected one or not.
  7. Ask in writing whether Account Engagement is available for net-new purchase. Its presence on a price list is not an answer.

Where we would recommend against Marketing Cloud Next

We should be clear that Marketing Cloud Next is the direction Salesforce is investing in, and for a business that genuinely needs multi-channel journeys, native segmentation across all CRM data and agentic campaign creation, it is the right platform and we recommend it regularly.

Where we recommend against it is a high-volume, email-only B2B programme with a single business unit and no near-term SMS requirement. That organisation gets 180,000 sends a year, a single scoring model, a Data 360 meter it did not previously have, and a rebuild of every Engagement Studio programme, in exchange for capabilities it has no plan to use. Account Engagement, with the bundled Marketing Cloud Next edition sitting alongside it for when the requirement does arrive, is the better commercial answer.

The alternative we considered and rejected for one client was moving them to Marketing Cloud Engagement Pro+ for the send volume. It solved the email ceiling at USD 2,000 a month, and it lost on the data model: Engagement is the legacy ExactTarget stack, its integration with CRM is looser, and putting a B2B lead-nurture business on it in 2026 is buying into the platform Salesforce is investing in least. The send allowance was real, and it was not worth the architecture.

At Aptivus Solutions we model the Data 360 meter alongside the licence before recommending either, because the licence is the smaller number in most of the quotes we review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pardot being discontinued?

No Salesforce announcement of an end of sale or end of life exists for Marketing Cloud Account Engagement, the product formerly called Pardot. Salesforce has published an explicit "no EOL, EOS or EOR" denial for Marketing Cloud Engagement but not for Account Engagement, in either direction. The Pardot Classic app retirement of October 2022 covered the app interface inside Salesforce, not the product.

How much does Marketing Cloud Next cost?

Marketing Cloud Next Growth is USD 1,500 per org per month and Advanced is USD 3,250, both billed annually, verified on Salesforce's pricing page 21 September 2026. These are org-level prices, not per user. Marketing Cloud Next also requires Data 360, which is consumption-metered separately at USD 0.005 per credit and is usually the larger cost.

Is Marketing Cloud included with Account Engagement?

Yes, as of September 2026. Account Engagement Growth+ bundles Marketing Cloud Next Growth, while Plus+, Advanced+ and Premium+ all bundle Marketing Cloud Next Advanced. Because Growth+ is USD 1,250 and Marketing Cloud Next Growth is USD 1,500 standalone, the bundle currently costs less than the thing bundled inside it on published list prices.

Has marketing moved to the Core, Advanced and Max editions?

No. The Core, Advanced and Max ladder announced on 3 September 2026 at USD 195, USD 395 and USD 550 per user per month covers Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, with industry clouds following later in autumn 2026. The marketing products remain on org-based pricing with Growth and Advanced edition names, which is a different structure entirely.

Can I keep Engagement Studio if I move to Marketing Cloud Next?

Only by keeping Account Engagement. Marketing Cloud Next has no Engagement Studio equivalent and uses Flow for journey logic, and there is no automated converter. Salesforce's documented approach is coexistence rather than migration, so existing Account Engagement programmes keep running while Marketing Cloud Next capability is added through permission set licences.

How many emails can Marketing Cloud Next send?

Marketing Cloud Next Growth includes 180,000 email credits per year and Advanced includes 360,000, both enforced allocations published by Salesforce. Additional sends are USD 2 per 1,000. For comparison, Marketing Cloud Engagement Pro+ at USD 2,000 per month includes 2.5 million email messages, so high-volume senders should check the send allowance before comparing monthly prices.

The question to put to your account executive this week

The specific problem this post describes is that Salesforce's marketing line-up currently prices the bundle below the thing inside it, uses the word "Advanced" for four different products, and attaches a consumption meter to the product that looks cheapest on a monthly figure. None of that is visible from a pricing page read quickly.

Before you renew or buy, ask for the Account Engagement bundle price alongside the Marketing Cloud Next standalone price, and ask what Data 360 consumption the proposed configuration will generate in year one. If you want those two numbers modelled against your actual send volume and contact count, we can do that with you.
